Arts for Learning Connecticut Presents Community Focused Programming

Our Arts for Learning Affiliate in Connecticut has implemented some exciting initiatives targeted at aiding and engaging the surrounding community.

For the past two years, through the generosity of the Variety Foundation for Children, Arts for Learning CT has offered family art nights, drum and dance after school workshops, and a community art project resulting in a beautiful 10' x 30' tile mosaic mural on the outside of a local community center.

This year, Arts for Learning CT has partnered with Unique and Unified, a non-profit group that provides after school service to students who live in the Marina Village Housing Project.  Three days each week students have the opportunity to work with artists Rodney Moore (Theater), Gerald Moore (Sculpture) and Linda Peck (Movement).  Arts for Learning CT tells us that Parents have loved watching their children develop artistic skills as well as social skills over the 14 weeks that the program runs.  Unique and Unified is a grass roots organization from the Marina community and it has been an honor for Arts for Learning CT to be the first arts organization to partner with them.

Additionally, three years ago, Arts for Learning and the United Way of Greater New Haven began the Boost Program in partnership with New Haven public schools.  The idea was to provide "wrap-around services," especially in the areas of health and well-being, to schools in underserved communities in New Haven.  Each year, the requests for artists from Arts for Learning CT to participate have increased.  The 2013-14 school year has seen the trend continue to the point that this year our artists are in more Boost schools (both during the school day and after school) than ever before.  Salsa, hip hop, and capoeira dance, story writing, book making, youth radio production, digital photography, and theater are being presented at the elementary and high school levels.  This has been a boost for Arts for Learning CT as well as the students and communities in New Haven.
