Tara Graviss, executive director of Arts for Learning San Diego, was profiled in a May 18, 2019, Q&A published in The San Diego Union-Tribune.  In the article, titled “Promoting the Power of Art Within Everyone,” Graviss discusses the history of the Young Audiences Arts for Learning (YA) network and her role leading  its southern California affiliate.

Regarding her decision to join Arts for Learning San Diego, Graviss points to the organization’s “outstanding reputation in the arts education community” and “dedicated” team that is “passionate about arts education" and the "power of professional teaching artistry.”

In the article, Graviss also details the many benefits of arts-based instruction, including social emotional and cognitive skills, among other academic and developmental benefits. “Through the arts, students develop skills like resilience, grit and a growth mindset to teach them how to master a new skill or technique, and succeed academically and in life after school,” she told the publication. “Research has found that arts education can increase empathy in students. Empathy is at the root of 21st-century skills, like collaboration, creative thinking, flexibility and social skills. Students who participate in the arts develop leadership skills, including agility, empowerment, commitment and reflection. They also prepare to use these skills effectively by developing a strong sense of identity and confidence in their ability to affect the world around them in meaningful ways.”
