YA Affiliate Spotlight: Big Thought in Dallas, Texas

The Young Audiences Arts for Learning affiliate in Dallas, Texas, Big Thought, has been busy organizing numerous arts integrated programs and events. Mario Tarradell, Public Relations & Marketing Manager at Big Thought, shared some of the biggest program highlights from the lone star state. Chelsea Mayo is the Dallas winner of the national NEA Musical Theater Songwriting Challenge for High School Students. Big Thought managed the contest in Dallas and now Chelsea is off to New York City this month to compete with two other regional winners for the grand prize.

Big Thought helps prevent summer learning loss for Dallas students with the Summer Achievers Academy, a program from Dallas ISD in partnership with Big Thought. The academy, a five-week summer program, focuses on reinforcing lessons learned throughout the school year as well as new skills to keep students motivated during their summer vacation.

Daisy Gamboa, a fifth grader from Anson Jones Elementary School, wrote a winning poem about bullying that brought her to New York City. She experienced her first plane ride, and the experience opened her mind to learning from different communities, fellow students, and the power of poetry.

The Concilio, a nonprofit organization which has partnered with Big Thought for more than a decade, specializes in education and wellness classes to the Dallas Latino community to insure parents are engaged and participating in their children's education.
